Hello guys im here today. After being part of the visual kei scene for a few years now I’ve come across many misconceptions and stereotypes that ultimately aren’t true. In this following blog I will be covering the most common ones.
1:Visual Kei singers are gay
Obviously you know how this one started. A pretty man in a dress can’t be straight….. 😒
Wrong!
Obviously there are going to be gay visual kei Singers because that’s natural. However just because a man tries to look pretty,doesn’t mean that he’s gay. After all you shouldn’t just assume things like that.
2: visual kei is dark
This one isn’t so wrong because bands like jilluka and dir en grey are very dark. Both the lyrics and videos are go tos if you love Gothic elements. However with bands like Alice nine and Lm.C you get much lighter happier lyrics and video.
Lm. C’s punky heart is definitely a cheerful happy song . I’ll link the video to that in the bottom ⬇
3: visual kei can only be rock music
This one is totally wrong. There are many vkei bands singers and songs that aren’t just rock. They have many pop music elements and techno
Visual kei artists like Kaya and gackt sing a wife variety of styles. Pop techno darkwave trance jazz and rock.

4:All visual kei songs sound the same
This I’d probably the one I hate the most. None visual kei fans say that all visual kei sings sound the same and that artists rip each other off .
Obviously there are going to be similarities. This one girl pointed out to me that in The Gazette’s the invisible wall lead dinner ruki is wearing red leather gloves, and in Disreign’s within the void Yohio is wearing red leather gloves .
I hate that right when people listen to a new visual kei sing they feel the need to compare it to other songs and other band. They don’t take the time to appreciate the effort. It’s maddening. Please guys don’t be the person that does this.
5:Visual kei singers suck at singing English
This one is more if a joke but still one that people believe. First you have to understand that some Japanese people pronounce English words with Japanese accents, so that makes it a little hard to understand. However there are plenty sing where the English is perfectly understood.
